Ok, it’s time to rip out that beautiful fuschia tile that was all the rage in 1979 and give that bathroom a desperately needed facelift but where do you start? I’m glad you asked. In this post, we’re going to try to provide some quick tips for a successful bathroom reno project with a focus on the most important aspect – the plumbing or to be more specific who the right plumber is for the job.Special thank to Langley Plumbing for sharing their expertise here.

1. Does your plumber have design chops?

If you’re an experienced contractor then this post is not for you. If on the other hand you do reno’s about as often as the Cubs win the World Series then it’s important that you choose a plumber that has a sense of design and can guide you as to what works and what doesn’t. If you get blank stares when you start discussing the look and feel of a renovation then you might want to keep looking. While it’s great having a plumber that does EXACTLY what you tell him (or her) it’s even better to have somebody on your side that can share their experience about what works and often more importantly what doesn’t work to save you from making any costly mistakes.

2. Does your plumber have impeccable references?

One of the things that we as professional plumbers are constantly surprised about is how rarely customers actually check the references we provide. Lots of folks ask for references but shockingly few actually end up speaking to our past customers on the phone. Our advice is to get 3 references and call every one of them. If your plumber doesn’t have 3 people that they can give you right away that should be a huge red flag. We expect to be asked for references, and typically at the end of a job when the customer is really happy and excited we’ll ask if they are willing to allow us to use pictures of their bathroom on our website and if they would be kind enough to provide a personal reference or testimonial.

3. Is your plumber covered?

Things can go wrong on any job site, we’ll admit that over the years we’ve made a few mistakes of our own. The important thing to know before choosing a plumber is are they fully licensed, insured, and bonded so that in the event there is an accident or mishap that they are in a position to make it right. This is a really important point to note – very often the cheapest quote can end of being the most expensive option in the long run. Insurance costs money, and unfortunately, there are unscrupulous folks out there that aren’t doing things the right way. Deal with a well-established company that has some history and has the necessary documentation to prove that they are covered should anything go awry on the job.
